Abstract:
The intention of this study is to estimate the aerodynamic performance of 2kW Straight Bladed Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (SB-VAWT). The wind turbine model is obtained from analytical approach using Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEM) and Multiple Stream Tube Model (MSTM). Research has revealed that, if the VAWT rotor is functioned with fixed blades, it is suggested to use NACA 0018. To investigate the effect of aerodynamic characteristics of NACA 0018 blade, the numerical simulations is performed on 2D VAWT model. The transient simulation was conducted in ANSYS Fluent using pressure based Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) methodology with the k-ω shear stress transport (SST) model. This simulation is carried out for the solidity of 0.4 at maximum power coefficient (Cpmax) at which the torque coefficient are evaluated and trend lines in graph compared with experimental model. The output power is verified between analytical model and CFD model. The model advised here comprises of three fixed straight vertical blades, in the future this model is meant to develop for the domestic and agricultural use at low speed wind conditions.

Application:
Energy resource for individual houses, office buildings, condominiums, cell phone tower, hybrid solar tower, dams and roads on the reservoirs
